Ed grew up in Spokane, Washington and was very active in school sports and outdoor activities including camping, hunting, fishing and skiing – both water and snow. After High School, he enlisted in the Army National Guard where he was trained as a Carpenter and he has applied his trade over most of the next 30+ years in the construction, remodeling and cabinetwork fields. He moved to Kaua`i in 1980 at the age of 21, getting off the plane with just $20 and a backpack. Ed started out camping on the beach, then after a few odd jobs, he got work as the caretaker at the Methodist Camp in Koke`e. Realizing Kaua`i was going to be too expensive for him to buy property, he moved to Hilo in 1986.

Ed started his Real Estate career in 1990, and over the next 14 years had worked for several different Brokerages. After earning his Broker’s license in 2004, he opened Splintered Paddle Realty, and then later, Hilo Bay Realty. He had also served as the Broker in Charge at RE/MAX Properties, and as Principal Broker at Hilo Brokers, Ltd.

In 1995 at the request of a client, he set up and managed for 7 years, Kurtistown Nursery, a certified export Palm & Dracaena nursery on 10 acres, just outside of Hilo. This provided invaluable hands on experience in every aspect of nursery work which included: land prep, greenhouse construction, irrigation work, plant propagation, pesticide application and marketing.

With over 1,000 closed escrows under his belt, and extensive experience in construction and farming, Ed comes to the table with a wealth of knowledge to assist clients who want to buy or sell virtually anything from homes to farm land or house lots, to commercial property.

“You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.” These words by Kahlil Gibran best reflect Ed’s philosophy on community service. His various endeavors to help make Hilo a better place to live include:
From 2001 to 2012 as a volunteer Soccer Coach, following his two sons from AYSO, on up through Hilo High School. He was also a High School Soccer Referee, and volunteer Referee for AYSO matches.
Since 1994, a member of the Kiwanis of E. Hawaii, with 3 separate 1 year terms as President, one each as Vice Pres. and Secretary, and a handful of 2 year terms on the Board of Directors. Ed was the first member to sponsor women into the club, and in 2002, he designed and oversaw the construction of the Children’s Petting Zoo at the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo, earning the Hawaii State Governor’s “Kilohana Award” as volunteer of the year.
From 1986 to 1992 Ed served as Actor, Director, Playwright, Set Construction, Vice President, and Board of Directors for the Hilo Community Players.
Past President and member since 2002, of the Makule Co-Ed Adult Soccer League.
Board of Directors for the UH Hilo Athletic Club Boosters from 2012 to 2017, and President for the 2014-2016 term.

Ed admits he’s an incurable “fishaholic”, and is most at home either on his boat fighting a Mahimahi, or on his kayak in Hilo Bay looking for the elusive Papio. He also enjoys playing Soccer every Sunday in the Makule League, and working on his 3 acre farm in Kurtistown. He is married to Wang Ge “Pearl” who in 2017 immigrated from China, and has 2 sons: Edward III (also an agent at HBR) and Chris, both from his late wife Cheryl.
